Transition, Travel, & Tourism
Traveling is going from one place to another, whether you are traveling locally or afar.
Tourism is the movement of people to other countries or places outside of their usual environment. It doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going abroad, it means you’re stepping outside your box! I like to travel from my small town to a nearby bigger city, Erie, PA, where I visit the beautiful Peninsula.
There are unanticipated, non-event, sleeper, and then we have anticipated transition times. When I introduced these types of transitions, I suggested mastering a self-care skill to support yourself during times of change.
One of those skills is to create or maintain a routine. Another is to get moving! Maybe part of your travel, part of stepping outside your box, could be taking a tour of the area you’re visiting. There are walking tours and events to experience. And if the weather’s bad, you could pop into a museum to walk around!
We also want to practice our relaxing habits, which may mean journaling the vacation or travel through writing or taking pictures and videos.
Additionally, practice mindfulness: breathing in and exhaling. Travel is an anticipated transition: it involves getting ready, which can be stressful or anxiety-inducing even though we know it’s coming.
There will be delays, lines, detours: anticipated or unanticipated. We want to make sure we’re practicing our self-care skills before, during, and after traveling. We want to travel with curiosity and wonder. Keep breathing in “Oh well.” And exhaling “So what?”
